  • Regulated Asbestos Containing Soils (RACS) Remediation Project

  • Project Value: $3.75M

Tasman was initially contracted to implement remediation of RACS at the Animal Health Building (AHB) redevelop Site located in downtown Denver, Colorado. The RACS removal for the AHB Site was implemented under an accelerated 45-day schedule following the CDPHE Solid Waste Reg. 5.5: Asbestos Contaminated Soil requirements. The RACS remediation was performed in a manner to allow for adjacent and concurrent vertical building construction activities to continue. The AHB Site RACS remedial activities and accomplishments included:

  • RACS excavation using soil wetting methods to depths of up to 14 feet, truck lining and burrito wrapping/loadout using two scaffolding stations and T&D. Approximately 1,305 truckloads (23,490) of RACS were remediated.

  • Placement of a demarcation geofrabic on the bottom and sidewalls of the excavation followed by backfill and compaction of the excavation. Approximately 1044 truckloads (18,792 cy) of clean borrow was loaded, hauled, and backfilled.

As a result of Tasman’s success in completing the RACS remediation at the AHB Site, Tasman was contracted to perform similar RACS remediation activities at the adjacent Hydro Building Site. Remedial activities were performed under a multi-phase permit following an approved Variance to the stringent CDPHE - Air Quality Control Commission Reg. 8: Control of Hazardous Air Pollutants regulations. Similarly, the RACS remediation at the Hydro Building Site was performed in a manner to allow for adjacent and concurrent vertical building construction activities to continue. The Hydro Building Site RACS remedial activities and accomplishments included:

  • Phase 1 northern portion of property RACS excavation using amended wetting methods to depths of up to 12 feet, truck lining and burrito wrapping/loadout using two scaffolding stations and T&D. Approximately 814 truckloads (14,949 cy) of RACS were remediated

  • Phase 2 southern portion of property utility corridor RACS excavation, lining and backfilling to provide clean piping corridors for subsequent redevelop activities. Approximately 770 linear feet of utility corridors to depths of 8 feet were remediated and approximately 57 truckloads (790 cy) of RACS were remediated.
